Anniversary Weekend recap

  • Posted on June 28, 2009 at 10:22 pm

It has been suggested to me that I write up the food extravaganza that was our anniversary weekend this year, even though it was more than three months ago. We’re foodies. We love to eat, and eat well. We didn’t intend for it to be a weekend-long celebration, but I don’t think either of us were complaining when all was said and done.

Our actual anniversary was on a Friday, and we started it at the Pluckemin Inn with the chef’s tasting menu. That’s all we had originally intended to do. Below are my notes from that night:

  • ahi, mussels in spicy, fois gras bon bon, balsamic and brioche
  • fish with spicy pineapple sauce in shell. cilantro, salt, spicy sauce
  • Noodles with hard boiled egg and stuff
  • first of the season halibut, buttered morels, pea puree
  • scallops, pork belly, beet sauce
  • venison. black trumpet mushrooms. kale. cippollini onions.
  • Japanese kobe, super titi garlic chips. pad thai flavors
  • sous vide rhubarb and rhubarb foam
  • lemon creme fraiche
  • chocolate caramel brownie
  • salted caramels

Some recollections: the halibut, morels and peas were just fabulous, though I’m not sure how you can go wrong with anything with morels. the “super titi” garlic chips were pretty phenomenal. The Husband loved the noodles and egg. I’m pretty certain we had cocktails. I believe they also gifted us with a glass of champagne. If this was all we had done or eaten, it would have been a fantastic weekend.

I’m pretty sure we were back at the Plucky for lunch on Saturday and then Saturday night we got sushi to go.

For Sunday brunch, we decided to finally try elements for the first time. The Husband had pheasant hash, I think I had the french toast. We were impressed with the food, and they had the chef’s table in the kitchen available for that night, so we decided to end our anniversary weekend in much the same format we started it. At the mercy of a chef. Once again we were not disappointed.

  • Terhune tamago. Crispy bacon sweetbread frisee. Citrus lauging bird shrimp.
  • Kindai o-toro
  • Kampachi crudo four ways
  • Popcorn. Coarse ground corn meal. Mushrooms, black truffles.
  • diver sea scallops. spring pea leaves. truffles. mussel broth.
  • Kindai tuna loin wrapped in rye
  • fois gras torchon. kumquats
  • guinea hen. yogurt spatzle.
  • 48 hour short ribs
  • Bacon and eggs. Mille feulle.

Some thoughts on the above: by the time we got to the guinea hen, I was starting to get full. The popcorn and cornmeal dish was OUTRAGEOUS. Really unique taste profile. We loved that there was so much seafood here. The only thing I didn’t really like was the tuna in rye and that’s because I don’t like rye. The tuna was incredible.  I think there was another dessert as well (either carrot cake or bananas foster, I can’t remember). They sent out the bacon and eggs when we were there for brunch. I’ll have to get Joe to give me the details again (brioche, maple custard, candied bacon, I don’t know), but from someone who doesn’t like bacon, it was pretty good. The Husband loved it so much they served it to him again at dinner (originally they weren’t going to but he asked for it). No cocktails tonight, but I believe they gifted us with a glass of rose cava.

It’s hard to believe we’ve only been going to elements for less than four months! It did get off to a rather auspicious start.

And that is the tale of gluttony that was our anniversary weekend. It was good food and a whole lot of fun! Just as the four years of our marriage have been…

tasty Sunday

We went out to our favorite brunch spot, elements, in Princeton, NJ this morning. They are kind enough to seat us in the kitchen at the chef’s table whenever we come in. It makes things easier so we don’t have to worry about moving with the Husband’s allergies to perfume, should someone come in with a “waft”. It’s also SO much more fun for us to be able to sit and hang out in the kitchen and get fed! Way cool.

They had corned beef hash back on the menu so the Husband was thrilled. They make it with poached eggs and fois gras. I had pancakes with fresh berry compote (yum!!!!!). Joe the sous chef introduced us to BLiS maple syrup. Good Goddess is that tasty stuff! Probably the best maple syrup I have ever had. So I now need to go order a bottle of that as well as some of thier vanilla fleur de sel, which will go incredibly in some ice cream, I think.

I have another batch of banana ice cream in the freezer now. I made it with more butter and brown sugar this time. I may need to start making it with 4 bananas instead of the three it calls for. I’m not quite sure yet, but I think it’s missing something. So now I have this, yesterday’s peach sorbet and the chocolate sorbet all in the freezer right now. I’m SO glad we got this big fridge last year! Our old one could never have held it all. Part of the reason I hadn’t used the ice cream maker till now was the space it took up in the old freezer was enormous.

I still don’t know what I’m doing with the sour cherries. I pitted them all (by hand, no gadget) and added 2 teaspoons of sugar and am letting them sit right now and give up some juice while I ponder this.  I really do need to do something with them by tomorrow, though.

so far, so fabulous

Today has definitely been a better day than recent ones have been. My head still hurts but I can deal with it.

I got out to the Amish this morning, in time to get the Husband the bacon, egg and cheese logs he likes. It wasn’t too crowded for a pork roast Saturday except for the fruit and veggie stand of all places. No fish this week, at the Husband’s request. Chicken breasts and pork tenderloin. Beef and turkey burgers in case we decide to BBQ. (But I think I forgot rolls!) I have some pork marinading for tonight. I’m thinking panko chicken breasts and roast potatoes for tomorrow.

I got to the Montgomery Farmers Market today and was THRILLED. This is more what I’ve been looking for from a farmer’s market! There were still only 6 or 8  stands (one of which was the Griggstown Farm Market) but so much better than the one-stand one in Franklin. I got a huge bag of English peas (of which I’ve eaten about half already) and some huge blueberries, some peach cider (which will make a great cocktail mixer!) from a stand that had some great breads and a peach salsa I will get next week, local farm fresh eggs, and cherries. Not just cherries, sweet AND sour cherries. I have a pound of each. I haven’t quite figured out what I’m going to do with them yet. Next week I’m going to pick up some local honey, too. I can’t wait to see what they’ll have as we get into the summer since it’s still too early for much of the fruits and veggies.

I got some peaches at the supermarket yesterday so I could make some more sorbet. That’s cooling in the fridge now before I can puree it and freeze it. It doesn’t taste as good as the last batch did. I’m wondering if it’s because they are supermarket peaches or if how I cooked it made a difference? Last time I cooked them with the water for 10-15 minutes then added the sugar, cooled it somewhat and then reheated it to reduce slightly. Today I added the sugar gradually as they were cooking in those first 10-15 minutes. I’m also going to make the banana ice cream again probably tomorrow. I was contemplating something frozen with the cherries, maybe a frozen yogurt? Or maybe I’ll just make them into syrup again. I don’t know…haven’t decided yet.

And Yay for having a laptop to work in on the kitchen!! Many thanks to the wonderful Husband for the continued geek-love.

rant: damn headache

I was supposed to go into NYC and meet the girls tonight and can’t because I have a nasty headache. Bugger.

Friday

  • Posted on June 26, 2009 at 1:24 pm

It’s gonna be one of those busy Fridays. So far I’ve already gone to the Dr for my magnesium infusion (which thankfully didn’t hurt as much this month!) and to the supermarket. It’s the newest Stop and Shop and they have the scan-as-you-shop which I love, love, love! Not only does it appeal to the geek in me, but you don’t need to deal with anyone at the checkout and it takes much less time than the self check out. Although I have to admit that scanning 30 cans of cat food is a pain in the ass.

Came home to gents cleaning my gutters. Better them than the Husband, which is worth every dollar.

The chocolate sorbet finally froze on the third churn. I don’t give a dang at this point, it can become chocolate sauce if it doesn’t freeze well. I’m so over the chocolate sorbet.

A new farmers market opens today at 2 just up the road. Supposedly they will have much more stuff than the market on Saturday, which I can’t wait to see.

I did buy peaches at the supermarket for another batch of peach sorbet and I have bananas ripening for more banana ice cream. Ok, so I have two batches of bananas, one to use when ripe, one when overripe. I want to see what makes a difference. I really do, to a certain extent, want to keep making ice cream instead of sorbet since I could use the calcium. I find myself eating much less of this than I would a pint of store bought. Plus there’s less crap in it. And I have a malted milk one on my agenda as well.

After all this, I’ll dress and head into the city for dinner, drinks (only one for me since I’m driving), and raucous laughter with my girlfriends. We don’t get together all that often any more, and I’ve missed the last couple ’cause of my health, but I cherish them deeply and miss them lots.

Tomorrow, up for my little farm stand, potentially, then off to the Amish since I didn’t get there yet this week and need food.

My pain levels have been through the roof the last 24 hours or so. Better now but last night was really, really rough. Vicodin wasn’t much cutting it. Am hopeful that as the weather moves out of this damp and dreary dreck that it has been, my body will decide to stop rebelling and like me again. Feh.

I’m playing around with the themes so things may be changing fairly frequently over the next week.

two more days, two more “episodes”

  • Posted on June 24, 2009 at 5:13 pm

well the last few days have been, quite frankly, craptastic. Murphy needs to get the blazes out of my life.

The peach frozen yogurt became peach sorbet and was just fabulously peachy with an amazing texture. Mixed some in with the remains of the white chocolate ice cream and it was really extraordinary. I never did get to try my cherry sauce with the white chocolate ice cream, the Husband couldn’t find it when he went down to get it. Ah, well….cherries in chocolate instead…

The chocolate sorbet, is still trying to be made. When they tell you you can’t make two ice creams back-to-back or that you need to wait till the bowl is frozen solid, they’re not kidding. Trust me on this one. At the moment I still (again?) have a bowl of chocolate sorbet soup in my fridge. If I can’t it to freeze tomorrow, I’m going to have to find something else to do with it! Heh, the sacrifices I have to make.

Lunch the last couple of days was some of the leftover quinoa, with chicken, peas, tomatoes and sriracha. I thought about taking a picture but a) I’m still having permissioning issues and b) I would’ve then needed to plate it instead of eating it out of the tuperware it had been stored in (and it wasn’t really very pretty either!).

Tomorrow’s Thursday again, which means my weekly trip to the Amish and the farm market.Need to figure out what I’m cooking this week and need to either get to the supermarket or schedule a delivery.

Friday I’m potentially lunching in Brooklyn and/or drinks/dinner in NYC with the girls.

I’m tired and cranky. I know this. It doesn’t make it any easier, though. If I don’t find a job soon, I’m going to lose my mind. I need a new brownie recipe. I need to get out of the house. I need to get out of the funk I’m in and get moving on the things I need to do, and just do them.

Yay, cherries!

  • Posted on June 22, 2009 at 9:30 pm

I love cherry season. They are, I think, my favorite fruit and unfortunately have all too short of a season, so I try to enjoy them while I can, cost be damned. These were actually very tasty cherries, too, with only two or three less than perfect ones in the bowl I had. Just cherries, nothing more. I’m glad I have the rest of the bag left for tomorrow. I thought briefly about trying to do something with them, but the Husband doesn’t care for cherries and these are almost too good to spoil. Although I could conceivably pitt a bowl of cherries and then add a couple of tablespoons of an almond liquor of some sort. Let that soak together for a little while. Maybe frangelico? I know I have plenty of that. Heh. Maybe split what’s left and do half plain and half with liquor. I think I may need to do a half batch of cherry frozen yogurt too.

Speaking of frozen yogurt, I’ll be trying a peach one tomorrow. I had peaches from Saturday’s farm market that went from hard to almost over-ripe in less than 48 hours. So I decided I needed to do something with them, fast, and peach frozen yogurts is where we’ve started. I peeled and cooked the peaches today and then reduced them a bit. Tomorrow I’ll make the actual frozen yogurt (seems the plain yogurt I have in the house- which is only 6 oz not 8 but that’s another rant- is two days past the Sell By date and the Husband won’t eat it so tomorrow I will go buy fresh yogurt.)

*squee* of geekiness

  • Posted on June 21, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Sometimes, it just gets to me. If there was an award for showing love through geekiness, the Husband would have to be up for it! First, he orders me the new iphone 3G S- and knows me well enough to get the smaller model (I’m not using all the space I have on this one and the new one is twice as large).

Then, he decides that the blog needs its own domain name and lo and behold, here we are. Now all I have to do is get him to show me where stuff lives on the server and I’ll be all set.

Heh. I’m so loved.
