About Me

I’ve been called the Demented Betty Crocker, by friends who know me long enough to have seen me go through the periods where I’m just cooking and baking up a storm. It used to coincide with my annual Halloween bash but alas, it’s been a few years since I’ve had one of those.

I’m a happily married lady living with my wonderful Beloved Husband and three cats in Central NJ. Marrying him was the smartest things I’ve ever done in my life and I couldn’t be happier (well maybe a little if we both had jobs again!) We’re foodies who love to eat and now that I’m not working, we’re cooking and baking again as well. We’re both IT geeks who work on Mac’s, though I usually get Windows when I work.

We both have food issues of varying sorts, so you’ll find no fast food or chain restaurants, except for a once a year Arby’s indulgence. And I keep craving McD’s french fries but never cave in.

I cook almost exclusively with soy milk, unless I’m trying to use up what was in the house for company. I shop at our local Amish market for all our meat, poultry and seafood, and whatever produce I can’t get at the farmer’s and farm markets. I so wish we had a bigger and better farmer’s market near us! I’m not fanatical about most things food related but we just -can’t- do supermarket meat and poultry anymore.

I’m trying this year, and with this blog, to step out of my comfort zone in a lot of ways. I’ve been cooking and baking and trying new recipes. So far, thank Goddess, more often than not they’ve been keepers. (I identify as Jew-witch, in case you were wondering.) Being unemployed helps give me more time to do this. When I was working we had a fabulous personal chef service we used for most dinner meals during the week.

We have the most well fed stray cats in the neighborhood, since they get leftovers and scraps. This year Momma Cat had a litter of three kittens, Patch, Smudge and Pumpkin. We just realized that Smudge is blind in one eye. We’re going to try and trap them with the help of our next door neighbor and see if we can get them adopted. But they’re so dang cute!

I have some health issues, chronic migraines and fibromyalgia, (and a few other things particularly in my neck and back) as well as anxiety but that’s mostly controlled these days. In 2008, I had a headache for more calendar days than I didn’t, which amounted to a headache for about 260 days (and yes, I counted). It sucked. 2009 is much better in that regard. Not great, but better!

All of the above, and then some, will get some mention in this blog. I’ll be trying to keep it mostly to food, but my health is bound to be another hot topic. Whining, venting and ranting may occur from time to time as well. I try not to whine about being sick. It is what it is and I really just try to do the best that I can each day. I do sometimes tend to push-push-push and just keep going until I’ve overdone it, but I can’t seem to help myself. I try not to let this rule my life. Sometimes I can’t help it, but when I can, I really strive to just live my life as I want it. It’s meant making a few concessions. I have a cane that we carry whenever we travel anywhere, in case I need the extra stability. We also have walking sticks for the woods and for Ren Faires. I have pain patches that I carry as well for when they’re needed.

And in case you were wondering, no, my name’s not Betty. But I have been told I’m a little demented. It’s ok; the Husband likes me this way!
